How to plant teparies

According to the Native Seeds description seed should be planted 1/2 inch deep and 4 inches apart with the summer rains. If rains are sparse, irrigate when the plants look stressed. Teparies do not tolerate overwatering.

Today Steve prepared a ground next to the border wall in La Casa del Tunel, Tijuana, Mexico. The soil is rich with compost. For project he created beautiful, perfect beds for our little guys.

Steve making rows

We have got 15 vertical rows against the wall. We water a soil a bit before putting seeds. In each row we plant 8 seeds of the particular kind of tepary bean. After that we water them. The last step was to put a fence to protect bean garden from animals and unwary people.

The last step - a fence

ECO-GREEN HOUSE:
O the rooftop of La Casa del Tunel is a great place for greenhouse. To create a greenhouse we reused plactic trays from the mursery school. It's also an eco-movment, because they get rid all of trays after first use!
We put seeds into the trays. First we made newspaper cups (vine bottles are perfect to do it! Just roll paper around a bottle and bend it on the bottom) and put them to the holes in the trays.

Then we filled them with mixed soil.
The soil was mixed in the bucket and included:
  • 1/2 bucket of the potting soil
  • 1/2 bucket of compost
  • 3 cups of Perlite
  • 1/2 cup of fertilize (Xtreme Gardening company)

What is worth to notice we planted tepary bean during the full moon.

At each tray we plant two varieties of tepary (8 seeds of one kind) and water them. To add more heat and make conditions more like on the desert, we covered trays with plastic panels.

And here is additional little garden with vegetables...
